Ah, the French Foreign Legion, a subject that doesn't get much play in American culture unless it is mentioned in an old Porky Pig cartoon or a bad Jean-Claude Van Damme movie. Now there's Code of Honor 2: Conspiracy Island, a first-person shooter that lets you play as part of the French Foreign Legion. However, this low-budget effort is so clumsy that any self-respecting shooter fan would do well to stay away.
There's not much of a conspiracy to Conspiracy Island, nor is there much of a plot to begin with. You are Sergeant Boulet, part of an elite team sent to the remote Pacific island after mercenaries seize it and butcher the science team. Your job: kill them. The localization from the original French game was maybe a bit too effective though, as the good guy voices are so downright American that you have to wonder why they didn't at least try to fake French accents. Then again, this is the French Foreign Legion, but even the female dispatcher's voice over the radio is American.
So what's bad? First off, the graphics engine and geometry are about on par with a shooter from the late 90s. The textures are somewhat up to modern standards, but they can't paper over the relative crudeness of the levels. It gets even worse when you find yourself constantly getting stuck on corners, or you can't go through a decent-sized gap, but you can squeeze your way through a smaller one next to it.
You joined the Legion to see the world; they sent you to this cave.Then there's the gunplay, which is the heart of any shooter. In Code of Honor 2, the gunplay is basically a joke. Weapons don't have any realistic heft or feel to them. Recoil is almost nonexistent; it's like you're firing air rifles. There are your standard variety of guns, from submachine guns to shotguns and assault rifles, but you won't bother with them once you discover how ridiculously overpowered your FAMAS (the standard French assault rifle) is. It has two modes, a standard mode and a silenced scope mode, and the latter is effectively one shot, one kill if you aim for the head, which is easy to do. With the rest of the guns, you have to unload a bunch of bullets and work at it before putting the bad guys down. I got through the entire game using just the FAMAS in silenced mode and the G11 assault rifle, the only other decent gun.
In addition to the unsatisfying gunplay, you have brain-dead enemies. Their most common tactic is to run from side to side or, this is my favorite, charge straight at you. There are only about three or four enemy models as well, so you end up shooting the same guys over and over again. With that said, the bad guys have doctorate degrees compared to your computer-controlled squad mates. Your buddies just run around scripted paths and won't react if a bad guy gets behind them and shoots at their backs. Plus, they're such poor shots that you end up doing most of the work anyway.
Mercifully, the levels aren't that big. In fact, they're actually quite small. You can blitz through Code of Honor 2 in about two hours. It's not a hard game in any way; even the final 'boss' battle is incredibly simple, as you have to just charge past some guys and plant explosives on a helicopter. That's it! You're treated to the end cinematic with a 'cliffhanger' ending, but this game is so bad you have to wonder if there will even be a Code of Honor 3. But since this is Code of Honor 2, apparently there's an audience for this franchise.
It's like F.E.A.R., but without the fun.Multiplayer is generic and nothing that you haven't seen before. There's deathmatch, team deathmatch, and capture the flag. Good luck finding a server full of players, though. Once you are in, you'll discover that the gameplay just revolves on around the level and shooting anything that moves. You die and respawn and keep going until someone wins or you quit out.
